After he was elected the American people hoped for an end to the turmoil but things only got worse. A visitor to the White House noted Grant as ââ¬Å "a puzzled pathos, as of a man with a problem before him of which he does not understand the terms.â⬠(whitehouse.gov). Kung Fu Panda free essay sample
Kung Fu Panda textual analysis Kung fu panda is set in the Valley of Peace, where the people of the valley are threatened by the late arrival of the evil snow leopard, Tai Lung. An ancient prophecy states that a hero, also known as ââ¬Ëthe chosen oneââ¬â¢ will appear out of nowhere to save the people in the valley, and the masters of martial arts have devised a competition in order to find this individual. However it is assumed that the chosen one will be a member of the Furious Five-the level-headed Crane, the easygoing yet formidable Monkey, the fast and quick-tempered Mantis, the charming and strong Viper, and Tigress, the boldest and strongest of the group- but when Po arrives he is the one selected by the master, Oogway. Po is in love with kung fu, we see this at the beginning when he wakes up from his dream and looks at his posters and models of the Furious Five. Regardless of him being big, clumsy and working in a noodle shop he still dreams of meeting the furious five. Po doesnââ¬â¢t want to disappoint his father and so decides not to share his love for kung fu but to keep it a secret. Although he is friendly, Po has very low self- esteem and believes that his failure is due to his obesity. When he feels depressed or upset, he usually stuffs himself with food to ease the pain. Master Shifu is Oogwayââ¬â¢s student and the furious fiveââ¬â¢s trainer. We first see him as a peaceful character who is old friends with Oogway. He never smiles at first because of his past. However, further on in the film he smiles because Po defeats Tai Lung and brings peace to the valley and most importantly to him. At the beginning of the film Shifu is unwilling to train Po and doesnââ¬â¢t believe that he has what it takes to defeat Tai Lung and makes Poââ¬â¢s training unbearable to achieve. After much convincing from Oogway, Shifu realizes that he must believe in Po in order for him to be successful. Master Oogway is an old tortoise. He is presented to be very wise and superior. The people of the valley and the furious five all look up to him and treat him with respect. Early on in the film, just when Oogway convinces Shifu to believe in Po, master oogway dies and leaves Shifu to continue his quest by training the dragon warrior(Po). Master Mantis is the smallest amongst the furious five, but is the strongest for his size. We see that size doesnââ¬â¢t matter when the mantis holds a roped bridge on his own with the Tai Lung standing on it. The mantis is also a good acupuncturist although he struggles when dealing with Po at first. Master Viper is a green snake and is the most sweetest, and caring of the furious five. Although she doesnââ¬â¢t have fangs, which is weird for a snake, her fast kung fu moves are amazing. She is one of the first to comfort Po whist the others see him as a ââ¬Ëwaste of timeââ¬â¢. Master Crane is presented to be the most patient of the Furious five and he is also the first to start a conversation with Po although it is awkward at first. Crane is like the ââ¬Ëmother henââ¬â¢ of the group although he is a male. In fighting situations, Crane flies around scanning the area for any danger and keeps a look out for any of his team falling and preparing himself to catch them. Master Monkey is the friendliest out of the five, and the easiest to approach. He was the first out of the five to recognize Poââ¬â¢s determination for kung fu. Master Monkey is the only one that calls Po from his first name and respects his kind loving nature. Monkey uses a traditional kung fu weapon to help him in his battles, a staff. Master Tigress is the ââ¬Ëprotectorââ¬â¢ of the group. She is the strongest and boldest however she is the least sociable. It is obvious throughout the film that Master Tigress was meant to be chosen as the Dragon Warrior but after Poââ¬â¢s unexpected arrival she is not. This leads her to dislike Po and not respect him. When her group and Po are laughing and joking together she doesnââ¬â¢t participate. Tai Lung is presented to be the ââ¬Ëevil villainââ¬â¢ of the film. The whole valley is scared of him. Tai Lung was sent to Chorh-Gom Prison, a maximum-security institution, until his escape two decades later, this suggests he has excellent martial arts skills and is dangerous. When faced with Po,Tai Lung insults his obesity and the fact that he is a panda ( pandas are not seen as an important animal in Chinese culture). Mr Ping is Poââ¬â¢s father and owns the most popular noodle shop in the Valley. He hopes that his son will continue to operate the shop, wishing to share with him the familys secret recipe to great noodles. Ping is shown to be selfish in a way as he does not let his son follow his dream of martial arts. Despite this fact, father and son share a deep mutual love and respect; this shows why Po does not wish to disappoint his father. The place where master oogway ascends is an important scene. The scene includes a peach tree which holds a special significance for Master Oogway. The way it is presented is very calm, with leaves flying in a peaceful manner. The tree is a symbol of longevity and renewal and its wood is said to ward off evil and its petal to have magical properties. He carved his staff from the wood of this tree and sprinkled a handful of petals in the Moon Pool in the Jade Palace every morning. Oogway called the tree that grew from the seed the Peach Tree of Heavenly Wisdom. It is a sacred place for him, the place he comes to meditate. Other places in the film are presented similarly. They are shown to have significance. For example when master Shifu and Po are in ââ¬Ëjadeââ¬â¢s palaceââ¬â¢, the palace is sacred and is the great kung fu school, home of Chinas greatest heroes, the Furious Five. Although the social groups in the film are made of animals, they have human-like behaviours. At the beginning of the film when Po is serving noodles to his customers and hears that Oogway is choosing the dragon warrior, he rushes to serve his food and the customers (a mother rabbit with her children) look frustrated and he children start crying. There are many stereotypes shown in the film, the most obvious one is about fat people. Po is seen to be an unlikely candidate for heroism merely because he doesnââ¬â¢t look the part. His overweight body, clumsy personality and eating habits imply than he is not worthy to become the dragon warrior. The movie has a very clear message of respect for bodily differences. The Furious Five, a tigress, viper, monkey, crane, and mantis, all have different bodies. The mantis is tiny and fragile, and a great fighter. While there is a lot of humor and mockery based on fat jokes at the pandaââ¬â¢s expense, he learns to believe in himself. Jack Black was the directorsââ¬â¢ first choice for the role of Po; Po represented Jack Blacks personality, a charming, innocent, goodhearted character. Jack black has used his voice for many characters but this was the first time he used his own in Kung Fu Panda. Stevenson, the director did a lot of research into making the film seem as real as possible; ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not a particular time period, but down to the details of roof shingles and water buckets and the tables and the cutlery, we did a lot of research to make sure that there was nothing in terms of the architecture or the references that would be incorrect. Initially the directors wanted to address the film with a Chinese backdrop throughout. The target audience for Kung Fu Panda is initially for kids, after the screening, the kids in the audience were practicing their kung fu chops, obviously excited by the action of the film. It is aimed at children who enjoy kung fu and action. The gender is for both girls and boys and conveys a good message. Since the film is based on kung fu it is obvious that the film originates from a Chinese background. The texts meaning effects the target from a passive persons point of view because it can lead people to agree with the fact that all fat people are lazy and donââ¬â¢t get anywhere in life. From an active persons point of view one might disagree and say that not all people are like that. To keep the audience entertained, the producers have used high quality animation effects and bright colors. The characters each have different personalities which make the audience enjoy it more because they donââ¬â¢t get bored of just one character. Kung Fu Panda is a 2008 American animated film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It was directed by John Wayne Stevenson and Mark Osborne and produced by Melissa Cobb. The film was supposed to have been a parody but the director decided to shoot it as an action martial arts comedy in the spirit of Hong Kong. The film initially started showing in America on June 6th, 2008. The reviews were excellent. Kung Fu Panda opened in 4,114 theaters, and was a hit! Grossing $20. 3à million on its opening day and $60. 2à million on its opening weekend. There are many camera shots used within the film. At the beginning of the film when Po stops dreaming, we see a long shot of Po and his surroundings. Within his surroundings we see Chinese bowls and dishes with chopsticks stacked in a pile. These images suggest that he is in a Chinese restaurant. We then see an extremely long shot which then shows us more dishes and pots. The camera angles we see when Po gets up are a ââ¬Ëhigh angle shotââ¬â¢ which looks down upon Po making him seem slightly small at first. The mise en scene throughout the film includes images and objects of kung fu warriors as well as Chinese cutlery and objects. This makes the audience feel as if they are in a Chinese surrounding and gives them an idea of the objects and people in a Chinese environment. The clothing of the people is also of a Chinese culture; the girls wear a traditional Chinese dress. Master Shifu has a long thin mustache which is traditional in the Chinese culture. The actions of the furious five in battle are kung fu moves which again reflect the Chinese culture. One of the denotations in the film is when master Shifu accepts to teach Po kung fu and Po then gives up and starts running away, master Shifu then stops him. This scene captures the moment, we see a soft side to Po and how he feels about his weight. The connotation suggests that even a big animal such as Po needs someone to guide him no matter how tough he looks he still needs someone to believe in him in order to succeed. Ideology is a key aspect in the film. At the beginning we see that the whole valley idolizes master Oogway. However after his death we see that master Shifu is equally respected. Po idolizes the furious five and dreams of becoming like them. We notice from the very start of the film his love towards the furious five. The film uses a linear narrative. The film is shown in chronological order; we can assume what the ending is going to be like. This is good technique for children as they do not get confused as to where the story is going to end. The film uses Proppââ¬â¢s narrative theory: there is a hero(Po), villain(Tai Lung), mentor(Master Oogway), helper(Master Shifu), dispatcher(Mr Ping), blocker(Furious five) and a prize(Dragon scroll) involved in the film. The genre for Kung Fu Panda is an Animation, Comedy theme. We identify this through the funny comments Po makes and some of the situations involved for example; when Master Shifu has a mini battle with Po over a rice cake. The film is a sub-genre as it involves comedy. This means that the audience will be expecting to see funny scenes throughout the film. The film addresses these expectations and has achieved the title of being a ââ¬Ëfun, animation comedyââ¬â¢. Overall, the film conveys a variety of messages; the most obvious one is that the individual who believes in himself will succeed, even if the odds are against him-This is explained by Poââ¬â¢s determination and his victory towards the end. The furious five learn that they should not judge by first impressions, and that their own superior knowledge and skills do not entitle them to humiliate those who are less competent. The secret of the dragon scroll also indicates the powerful role played by belief in structuring human behaviour. When Poââ¬â¢s father explains to him that the secret is in his noodle soup is ââ¬Ënothingââ¬â¢ and that things are only made special if people believe they are special, Po is able to relate it to the dragon scroll. He realises that things donââ¬â¢t just happen, you have to believe in yourself in order to achieve.

Socialism Essay Example For Students
Socialism Essay If I had the chance to run my own society, I would run it under socialism. Socialism is a powerful but still controlling system. My society will not be a utopia simply created in peoples mind. It will be a product of economic and social development. Socialism is more of a people government rather than Capitalisms wealthy businessman government. The idea of socialism is to lessen the gap between the poor and the rich. Socialism is a form of individuality, and everyone is a part of the economy. In my socialist society the worker will own the means of production, rather than a rich upper class man who will cheat the workers out of their money. Society can control production unlike the economic anarchy of capitalism. Socialism will give production money to the workers rather than individual profit. This is because instead of a group of angry workers, you have an equal and fairly paid group of workers. In which they are all paid for the quality and quantity of work they do. Socialism will give the workers a sort of freedom. The more money that the workers bring in, the better schooling the children can get, and the better the future will be for their children. In such a society we will not only become more human, but also more productive, because work will be something we want to do and we will make more effective use of our creative powers. Everyone gets his or her equal rights with socialism. It means full participation by each individual in the intellectual, cultural, and political life of society. Socialism will be the best of my society. This is because it creates a better basis for cooperation and mutual regard. It will be possible for everyone to live a reasonably affluent life and be free of long hours of routine toil. Work will become a free and self-affirming activity for each worker and they receive the full fruits of their labor. Workers can actually enjoy what they do for a living. Above all, it will take the control of industry and of all branches of p roduction that go out of the hands of mutually competing individuals, and instead institute a system in which all these branches of production are operated by society as a whole. That is, for the common account, according to a common plan, and with the participation of all members of society. Socialism would be better than capitalism because of many reasons. First capitalism does not give equal rights to society. Capitalism uses laissez-faire. Which means that they want a tiny minority of citizens to control a vast majority of a nation wealth. What if they mess something up? Everything will fail and the people will get screwed because the government needs the money, and they do not have enough for the people. Capitalism would only be fair to owners of large companies and wealthy people. Basically capitalism is playing a game of risk, called an economic lottery. They have a fifty-fifty chance to win or lose. And they have not won yet. In my opinion is that socialism would be the best for my ideal society. It gives the most freedom to the people. Socialism gives the people more choices, and that lead to a better life in the future because they are doing what they want in life. It will be a product of economic and social development. In all Socialism is a form of individuality, where everyone is a part of the economy. What I mean by Socialism is a condition of society in which there should be neither rich nor poor, neither master nor masters man, neither idle nor overworked, in which all men would be living in equality of condition.

The Death of Chivalry Essay Example For Students
The Death of Chivalry Essay As humans, we adapt to our surroundings and evolve over time, progressing into more modern version of ourselves. As we progress, we are bound to leave some fragments of ourselves in the past, absorbing the latest elements of our time, but we ultimately hold on to our rooted values that make us who we are. A good way to understand the evolution of communication is to compare modern media, to media from the past. The Notebook is a romantic drama set in the 1940ââ¬â¢s, and the most significant theme throughout the movie is that love conquers all. Regardless of opposing factors such as Allieââ¬â¢s refusal to see Noah at first, her parentââ¬â¢s disapproval, and waiting years for Noahââ¬â¢s letters that never came, their love never died. On the other hand, Friends with Benefits is a modern day romantic comedy that follows the relationship between a New York headhunter that enters a no-strings-attached relationship with her latest client, but unexpectedly finds herself in a complicated situation when emotions get involved. We will write a custom essay on The Death of Chivalry specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now As well as being a human phenomenon, this concept allows for the better understanding of the modern relationship as well. As we observed the various generations, technology has become a major influence in most modern day relationships; not only used as an outlet to reach your loved one, but also as an easier communication avenue to cheat. Maybe our grandparents are old fashioned, but until women wise up and ask for the things they deserve, chivalry will seize to exist. Eloquence of romance and courtship has evolved just as we have, becoming increasingly casual and forthright. Due to the rise and advancement in technology, Chivalry is completely dead. In the culture we now live in, it seems to be completely impossible for men to do what is perceived to be the ââ¬Ënormalââ¬â¢ thing. From our grandmothers to our mothers, boys have been taught to pull out chairs and hold doors, pay for dinner and drinks, and pursuing a woman implied a date. When did what was once an expectation become an acceptation? Dating is done, but on the rare occasion that a girl is taken out, it is most likely initiated via text message. The channel of communication is less personal; thoughts that are said are easily communicated through text messages. Text messaging allows for emotional expression without vulnerability. Courtship has evolved rapidly in the 21st century, such as the acceptance of online dating and the assortment of smart phone dating applications as a ââ¬Ënormââ¬â¢. Tinder is a social application that helps individuals meet new people by finding nearby matches and connecting them if they are both interested. Grindr, is a location-based application to meet gay, bi and curious guys for dating purposes. In an constantly changing society of communication between 140 character tweets, hashtags, and posting statusââ¬â¢ reflecting ones feelings, we have lost the ability to communicate altogether. A noisy bar is a common place where singles expect to get to know someone new, and wind up in uninteresting small talk with someone they will most likely never speak to again. As seen in the younger generations, such as Matt and Tracey who met at a party, or the Aguilarââ¬â¢s relationship which began with Eric ââ¬Å"just trying to get some tail. Women have begun to allow men to adhere to the bare minimum. ââ¬Å"Many technologies look at the features that face-to-face communication offers and try to integrate these options into technological advances,â⬠(Mottet, Vogl-Bauer Houser, 2012) such as skype. This allows for the couples that are already in committed relationships to keep in touch during times of separation, as seen with Constance and Andre who ââ¬Å"once a day everyday us ed skypeâ⬠during Andreââ¬â¢s deployment, abuse of such communication tools is much more rampant. .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e , .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e .postImageUrl , .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e , .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e:hover , .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e:visited , .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e:active { border:0!important; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e:active , .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5fa40a75720420c89869026ecb88556e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Analyse the openings of the two film versions of "Lord of the Flies" EssayAlso, older generations were more prone to love at first-sight-type encounters, possibly because they werenââ¬â¢t exposed to all of the options in the world. Mary Lee and Richard met on the dance floor and fell madly in love, and Gilda exclaimed that ââ¬Å"once he came back from England, I knew I was going to be with him and he didnââ¬â¢t even know it yetâ⬠regarding her relationship with Barry. Where as, younger people are over saturated with options via mass communication. They are more likely to be hesitant to jump head first into relationships, such as Nick who receives ââ¬Å" pictures of engagement rings and he ignores themâ⬠from Hazel. Clearly, older generation couples such as Joe and Paulette, who explained ââ¬Å"other then the advancement of technology, we are still us,â⬠arenââ¬â¢t aware of the array of options that are easily assessable. Not only does the 21st century provide people with effortless dating outlets, but it also provides them with effortless cheating outlets as well. The Ashley Madison website has been featured extensively due to their unusual tag line, ââ¬Å"Life is short, Have an affair. â⬠The unusual nature of the website promotes adultery and cheating between long term partners, but like most dating sites, Ashley Madison allows anyone to sign up to their system for free. Having a wide variety of options at your fingertips results in insecurities, and untrustworthy relationships. But of course, technology has a solution for that too, The Journal of Law and Family Studies explains ââ¬Å"retailers of spyware have attributed the steady rise in sales to ââ¬Ëwary married couples. ââ¬â¢ In essence, technology has made uncovering secrets about oneââ¬â¢s spouse, ââ¬Ësuch a painless, anti-septic process that the boundary delineating what is permissible in a relationship appears to be shifting. â⬠Spyware software allows a user to convert information of another user through Internet connection or access to their hard drive. Before finding ââ¬Ëthe oneââ¬â¢ most people are involved in prior relationships, better known as exes. There was a time where breaking up meant cutting all ties, completely, which is no longer so easy, nor, do we want it to be. Maureen Oââ¬â¢ Connor from New York Magazine elucidates how ââ¬Å"we gorge ourselves on information about the lives of our exes. We canââ¬â¢t help ourselves. â⬠Oââ¬â¢Connor explains that everyone has exes; it might not be your boyfriend or girlfriend of several years, but possibly a one-night encounter, or even a flirtatious friendship. All of these situations have allowed for a casual view on relationships ââ¬Å"because not committing means keeping more love interests around as possibilities, and because the digital age enables us to never truly beak up. â⬠More often then not, you will be seeing them again, maybe not face to face, but online, you watch your exesââ¬â¢ lives unfold parallel to yours. Gilda and Barry connected at a party, except Gilda was dating someone else at the time, and shortly broke it off after meeting Barry. Now in social media culture, ending a relationship isnââ¬â¢t as easy. Social networks allow an ex to provide affection even after the break up, and ââ¬Å"sometimes the medium is the message. An ex who ââ¬Å"likesâ⬠your selfies thinks you still look hot. An ex who ignores 2 a. m. texts is either asleep or over you. â⬠Casual conversations with exââ¬â¢s are a normal occurrence which involves catching up, and a small reminder that the history did happen, but then it ended and both individuals moved on, sort of (Oââ¬â¢Connor). The youth today is becoming more and more attached to technology, and it seems to be rapidly progressing. Relationships are being built online and through phones. Technology should remain as a form of communication, not the only form to communicate. Technology is a great form of entertainment, but shouldnââ¬â¢t take away the social skills that are learned from face to face interaction. If you never unplug, you can never partake in what comes with personal relationships among family and friends. .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a , .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a .postImageUrl , .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a , .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a:hover , .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a:visited , .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a:active { border:0!important; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a:active , .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8815a6a8b34dc1f9b3fbdb9e7531db4a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dead Poet's Society: Neil Perry's Death EssayCell phones are creating a distraction from reality and constantly send the irritating non-verbal message of ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t bother talking to me. â⬠Technology is clouding the advancement of personal relationships such as providing iPadââ¬â¢s to elementary students as an easier form of learning, or giving a six year child an iPhone. Chivalry will continue to cease to exist until the norm is changed. Younger couples havenââ¬â¢t had to grow up, so they havenââ¬â¢t. The ideas of marriage and children have remained exactly that, just an idea because technology provides options. The economy is making it harder to become an adult and adhere to the responsibilities that are involved, which creates an indolent culture. Men no longer have to put in the creative effort of the small pleasures involved in an intimate relationship. Society has evolved the idea of a date from a friendly gesture between two individuals with the common goal of getting to know one another, to sharing a meal with a potential life partner. Eventually, women will start asking for what they deserve, the things that used to be expected of men, but until then, chivalry still exists. Bibliography: Mitchell, J. (2007). The Differences between Buddhist Music in Japan Essay Example
The Differences between Buddhist Music in Japan Essay Example The Differences between Buddhist Music in Japan Essay The Differences between Buddhist Music in Japan Essay Aragua The Differences between Buddhist Music in Japan, China and Tibet The Differences between Buddhist Music in Japan, China and Tibet The whole purpose of religion is to facilitate love and compassion, patience, tolerance, humility, forgiveness. -Dalai Lama Music plays an important role in religion, significantly influencing the worship practices of individuals who follow these faiths. As the music of a certain faith is influenced by the culture of a place, the music of certain peoples and places are influenced by the music of important religions that become deeply embedded in the culture. In this way, musical styles develop that are both religious and cultural, and are a reflection of both. This music is held in high regard by the people of these religions and cultures because it is the music that represents those aspects of life that are most precious. Culturally, music is a source of nationalist pride and unity for a group of people. Religiously, music reflects how followers worship their respective deities. In the Buddhist practice, music and chants are used for meditation across the global span of the religion. However, different forms of music and chants are used in a variety of ways throughout religious practices. The music and different forms of chants in the Buddhist religion affect Buddhist practices, and are also influenced by the religion and the different locations around the world in which Buddhism is practiced. Japan, China, and Tibet have the highest concentration of Buddhists and Buddhism is an integral part of the culture in these nations. In addition to Buddhism being reflected clearly in the cultures of Japan, China, and Tibet, each of these nations also has their own forms of prayer expressed through raying musical styles. In order to further investigate the styles and forms of Buddhist music, a short history of the religion will bring many of the elements of this cultural and religious music to light. Buddhism is based on a concurrent following of Four Noble Truths and an Eightfold Path. The Four Noble Truths are: 1) that life consists of suffering, 2) that the origin of suffering is attachment, 3) that suffering can only be ended through Miranda, and 4) that the path to the end of suffering is the Eightfold Path. This Development. The basis of the Buddhist faith is the belief in Karma (that the sections one makes in their current life will be returned to them in their future lives) and Rebirth (that one will be reincarnated in another life after death). There are a variety of different forms of prayer, worship, and meditation practices in the Buddhist religion, and each of these practices involve different forms of music and chanting. Every detail of faith, from the Four Noble Truths to the deep belief in Karma, is reflected in the sounds of Buddhism. These sounds have become a part of the Japanese, Chinese, and Tibetan cultures and are a constant reminder of the Buddhist tradition in these parts of the world. For example, In a Zen temple, the hours of the day may be marked by the deep somber tones of the big o-gang bell in the bell tower, evoking the idea of impermanence (Mall 1959). A bell tower can be heard for miles around and will create an environment of thoughtful contemplation for the surrounding area, further connecting the culture of a location with the precious music of a religion, and constantly reminding practicing Buddhists of their beliefs and education to follow the Eightfold Path. The effect of a Buddhist Temple bell tower may be felt in a number of religious raciest; the Muslim call to prayer is heard from a mosque across entire cities at midday, and the melodious clanging of Catholic and Christian cathedral bells may at times reach a volume that could only be described as a roar, but each of these sounds is a reflection of the religious practices these holy buildings house. Buddhism is set apart from other religions in the intricate and sacred ceremonies that revolve around the music of the religion. Wellness expresses his rapture at Buddhist music, There is scarcely any religious denomination on the face of this earth in whose cared ceremonies music holds a more prominent place than Buddhism (Wellness 1957) In oral traditions of Buddhism, the words of a sacred text are learned and recited from memory. Chant is a ritual used as a musical representation of this oral tradition. Not only are sacred texts memorized, but when these texts are recited, they are said with rhythm and pitches, which create a more spiritual and reverent atmosphere during the ritual of chant. The Buddhist monks who perform these chants therefore memorize the sacred texts as well as the specific choral or pitched movements or intervals that are carefully placed throughout the chants to emphasize certain parts of the texts and evoke certain emotions tied to the sacred traditions reflected in the texts as well as in the act of chanting. This ritual of chanting is a religious experience for the monk who is performing the chants as well as for the viewers of the bring awareness to the mentality of truth and living deeply connected with the present moment, an important aspect of faith for followers of Buddhism. Again, Just as different countries have different styles of music that reflect their ultras and people, the three countries in which Buddhism is most prominent, Japan, China, and Tibet, have different cultural forms of Buddhist music that represent their strong Buddhist faith as well as integrate the musical instruments and aspects of their culture. The music of these countries is similar in many ways, laced together by the common thread of Buddhism to guide the development of music for worship, but each nation still reflects the unique culture of the place in the Buddhist music of the people. SOMY is an improvised chant that has two styles: rooky and rooky. SOMY uses the You scale, a pentatonic scale with ascending intervals of two, three, two, two and three semitones. SOMY is a form of esoteric ritual chant that is used worldwide in the Buddhist tradition, though the use of this chant is also relevant to the place in which people worship. SOMY is a type of music that possesses mystical syllables inhabiting the recitation of certain mantras. When this form of music is performed, the assembled congregation attain a blessing from hearing these chants. Since SOMY is a type of chant and meditation that is used in the Buddhist religion and cultures, it is influenced by the Buddhist faith, but t is also influenced by the cultures around it. While most forms of Japanese Buddhism use music quite prevalently, true SOMY is a rare find in Japan, present only in a select few temples on specific ceremonial occasions. In the scope of Buddhism in Japan, the influence of Buddhism of other cultures and the influence of other languages are accepted as a part of the music, and part of the ceremony. Japanese Buddhist liturgical chants are divided into three different categories: Bonsai, hymns in which Chinese characters stand for Sanskrit sounds, Was, hymns with texts written in Japanese, and Kansas, hymns with purely Chinese texts. In the way Chinese text substituting Sanskrit, and Chinese text standing alone are clear examples of the blending of languages and culture throughout Japanese Buddhism, and the truly worldwide breadth of the Buddhist religion. Surprisingly, hymnal texts written in Japanese only occupy one of the categories of Japanese Buddhist texts. The most melodious of these chants is the Was. Was tends to be heavily syllabic in style, poetic in text, and with a clear line, creating a musical chant that is most like the more Western understanding of religious hymns and worship music. Compared to Was chants, SOMY is much more complex musically, and the rarity of this type of worship music makes it that much more intriguing for anyone who is privileged to hear it performed. There are two levels of SOMY that are observed, the first style lies exclusively in the domain of priesthood, which passes from master to pupil continuously, as reflection of the that is observed is for the public to observe, but is still only performed by Buddhist priests and monks. Yet many of these mantras, or Hookup, are reserved only for those in priesthood. Hookup literally meaner a mystery piece or secret composition. The secrecy of these mantras is due to the belief that they are a psychic and cosmic force. There is power to this chant because of the presence of the mystic syllable mm, which is sacred in the Buddhist religion. In this way, the importance of music to Buddhism is further solidified by the private performances of SOMY, proving that the music and chants of the Buddhist tradition are not only for the benefit of the congregation or as a type of worship, but also as a sacred way of passing on priesthood between holy leaders. In another form of these Japanese chants, Kansas, four ritual sections comprise and cake sense of the chants, each a different genre of chants, used for different occasions and to evoke a variety of different emotional responses. The first, Bombay, is a hymn of praise, used during ecstatic times of worship. Second is the Gangs, an elaborate chant performed by priests while they deliberately and ceremoniously scatter lotus flowers, a Buddhist symbol of enlightenment. The don-on is an offering of pure chant or mantra to the Buddhist deity, Buddha himself. Lastly, the Shake-Joy is a chant that occurs toward the end of any service as a closing, a contemplative farewell. These chants explore Japanese Buddhism in greater depth and allow one to understand the different ways that music and chants are used in the ceremonies and services of the religion. The music of Buddhism is central to the faith because without music many Buddhist ceremonies could not take place, which is a crucial difference between Buddhism and other faiths, many of which employ music to aid worship, but the central aspect of the religion would not be lost if the music were missing. The important role that music plays to the Buddhist faith is clearly represented by the complexity of the music and chants. Each song and chant has a pacific meaning, a particular time and place, and even is performed by certain Buddhist leaders. After the Eddo period, Western music and influences enter Japan during a time known as the Meijer Period (1868-1911); however, the new western influence did not completely replace the traditional music styles that were established during the Eddo period. The Meijer period introduced western concepts such as harmonistic and fixed meter and tempo, which was not common in music from the Eddo period. These western influences were combined with the traditional Japanese scale and were implemented into the newly developed public school systems. Many of the songs that were used were traditional Japanese folk songs or western songs that had been translated into Japanese text. One of the primarily Japanese instruments with a religious affiliation is the Chihuahuas. Most of the recent pieces played on this instrument are derived from spiritual or meditative songs. During the Eddo period, a group of priests called the Sumo used the instrument as a spiritual tool to help focus breathing for meditation. These priests were from a sect of Buddhism that saw the instrument as a way to achieve enlightenment by playing songs that inspired Winnie is a term used by the Chinese that refers to music. Fabian is a term to denote Buddhist monastic chants. It has been used by the Chinese since Buddhism was introduced. Fabian in translation meaner scripture recitation; it is emphasized that the chants be tranquil. Chant is the only body of liturgical action and an expression of the liturgy itself. It is used to channel liturgical participation amongst the people. Gate is a sacred verse. Buddhist music has made an influence on world music Just as it has been influenced. Buddhist famine, which is characterized by a relaxed and say pace with solemn, soft tones. Chinese music has been influenced by Famine when it was developed to popularize a new style of giving sermons and publicizing the Dharma sung to famine melodies. According to the Vienna in Ten Recitations, regularly listening to Buddhist famine can give the following five benefits: a reduction in bodily fatigue, less confusion and forgetfulness, a reduction in mental weariness, a more elegant voice and greater ease in both personal expression and communication. The style of chanting in Tibet is called choral singing, it allows the monks to sing solo chords. The monks of Tibet are able to produce deep, guttural monotones that disperse into polyphony. As a Western listener it is likely to assume that the monks are singing in parts, however each monk is displaying a full set of sounds and pitches of firsts, thirds, fifths and additional overtones as well. The ability to produce these overtones and multi-phonics with one voice has been researched and there is no reason or explanation why these monks are able to sing this way. There has been studies that think it is because of the location of Tibet because it is located at the highest elevation in the world. The monks begin training at the age of twelve, before their voices will be classified as bass, baritone or tenor voice. The average monk is able to produce a D two octaves below middle C; which is beneath the range of most male singers. The ability to produce these sounds comes with great focus which allows the singer to achieve the awareness that is stated in the Eightfold Path. Meditation Mindfulness is Buddha word for meditation. By mindfulness he meaner: you should always remain alert, watchful. You should always remain present. Not a single thing should be done in a sort of sleepy state of mind. You should not move like a somnambulist, you should move with a sharp consciousness. SOHO There is a sense in which the monk, in deep meditation, is thought to hear within himself spiritual sounds of specific types that only he can hear. The frame drum, cymbals, conch horn, double-reed oboe, long trumpet and thigh-bone trumpet are though to evoke the thudding, crashing, ringing and tapping within his body; which mirrors the spiritual forces of the universe. (Mbabane: 21) Upon hearing these sounds, the pe rson may naturally become mindful of the Buddha, mindful of the Dharma and tart, so music inspires or induce the spirit with sounds that they hear. Music plays an important role in religion, influencing the worship practices of each individual who follow these faiths. From SOMY chanting in Japan to choral, monophonic singing in Tibet, there are many differences and approaches in attaining mental wellness and achieving focal awareness in the Buddhist religion to spread the Dharma and become as Buddha-like in nature as the individual Buddhist follower can. Whether one believes in a religion or not, and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there isnt anyone who doesnt appreciate kindness and compassion. -Dalai Lama Bibliography Chin, Pi-yen. Phonics Practice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Phonics Practice - Essay Example They are learning to solve and decode the mystery of stringed words. Learning phonics is the key to learning to read print. "Research directly points to the direct relationship between phonic instruction and success in acquiring the skill to read print. In short, evidence on the importance of phonics is incontrovertible." (Savage, ). The practice of phonics everyday is the key to mastery in reading fluently. This should be practiced with music, where songs based on phonics can be reinforced. A video approach is even more effective, as it stimulates the auditory as well as the visual concept. And it is easy for the child to remember and decode information both using their auditory and visual stimulus. Flashcards can also be used for further practice. "The English writing system is based on alphabetic principle: that is the individual speech sounds (called phonemes) are represented in writing by individual alphabet sounds (called graphemes). Children need to understand the alphabetic principle as they learn to read. Mastering these sound symbol relationships is what phonics is all about." (Savage, ). Phonemic awareness - the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in spoken words is crucial to success in beginning reading. It is in-fact a better predictor of learning to read than listening ability, IQ and several other factors. Lack of phonemic awareness puts children at risk of failure to learning to read. Phonics should begin with rhyme recognition and rhyme production and continue with segmentation, isolation, deletion, substitution and blending of phonemes throughout the learning program. Emphasis should be on the five essential elements phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. . (Savage ). Motivation should also be the key factor in reinforcing the concepts. Children should be exposed to a variety of folk tales, fairy tales, rhymes and stories from diverse cultures which can encourage them at their level of learning to code and decode the symbols and decipher the hidden meaning. This journey of exploration of literature should be rewarded by more challenging books, materials and rewards. (Savage ). Although phonics remains an essential factor in the word recognition, other strategies should also be taught in helping children identify words and unlock the meaning of words they encounter in print. Children use multiple clues in identifying words, including sight recognition, and context clues all these need to be integrated with the study of phonics to nurture a fluent reader. This lesson should begin from home before Kindergarten years and should be fully mastered by third grade. The appropriate level of challenge should be maintained throughout. These skills should be taught to help children become productive and fluent readers. "Through critical attention to relevant research and careful observation of children in the reading-writing process, we teachers can intelligently decide how to teach phonics. . . . I prefer to teach phonics strategically, in the meaningful context of the predictable stories children read and write every day. In the context of written language, phonics instruction facilitates meaning making and independence."-Regie Routman, 1991(Weaver, 1996) Comparative and naturalistic research indicates that encouraging children in phonics not through drill but integrated natural approach is more effective.
